Bamboolele

leave a comment »

I just made an ukulele from scratch. I was planning to make a detailed post about it but realized it would take to long. So I put the pictures I took at the process of building it in a video, and published it on YouTube. Here is the link.

The final result looks like this:

The strings length is 20”.

The distance between each fret and the bridge is as in the following table:

fret inches    additional 1/32
of an inch

0    0.000000  0.000000
1    0.000000  28.736352
2    1.000000  23.859856
3    2.000000  17.461035
4    3.000000  9.625331
5    4.000000  0.433388
6    4.000000  21.961328
7    5.000000  10.280997
8    5.000000  29.460211
9    6.000000  15.562979
10   7.000000  0.649716
11   7.000000  16.777448
12   8.000000  0.000000
13   8.000000  14.368176
14   8.000000  27.929928
15   9.000000  8.730518
16   9.000000  20.812665
17   10.000000 0.216694

It’s called “bamboolele” because the fretboard, the nut, the saddle and the bridge are made of bamboo.

The material to build it (excluding the wood, which I took from leftover pieces) cost about 50 USD.

The YouTube video is the disclosure of a patent I was planing to write, but have no money for. If you wanna build one for your own use, I’d be glad to provide more details about it’s construction. Just send me an e-mail (see top right of this page).

‎”When asked by the Pope (I forget which one) what the Catholic Church could do for music, Igor Stravinsky is reputed to have answered without hesitation: “Give us back castrati!”" (Ref.: http://www.mit.edu/~jcb/jokes/#musician)
